"It's that coursework time again! Before you begin to panic, just think of it as an easy way to score marks for your science GCSE. If you do well in your coursework, it takes the pressure off your exams. Coursework is an excellent opportunity for you to show the examiner that you understand science.

coursework is divided into different sections, and you will be given marks for each section. This is excellent, because if you are not particularly good at the practical part of your coursework you can make up the marks in the plan or the discussion sections.

There are 4 main sections. Let's look at them one by one.

Planning

In this section you are planning what you are investigating, why you are investigating it, how you are going to do it, making it a fair test, and finally predicting what you think will happen.

1. Decide upon a topic that has something you can measure, because you can collect a set of data or recordings that you can draw graphs of and comment upon.

2. Find out as much information as you can on your topic, this will help you make your predictions - if you understand the topic you can work out what you expect to happen.

3. Work out what you are going to MEASURE, CHANGE, and CONTROL in your investigation. For example - if you are looking at the affect of increasing acid concentration on the rate of reaction of marble chips, you will MEASURE the rate of reaction by measuring the carbon dioxide gas given off during each test, you will CHANGE the concentrations of acid and you will CONTROL the amount of acid you use, the mass of marble chips that you use, the temperature of the acid, the surface area of you marble chips and the equipment you use.

4. This is an area that examiners look out for, if it is done correctly it will get you top marks: Make sure you have made your investigation a FAIR TEST, that means writing down all your controls and explaining why you have done them.

5. The more data you have the more reliable and accurate your results will be. The examiners will look for a good set of results and if you have only carried out each test once these will not be very reliable results.

6. When you are planning your method make it simple, clear, accurate and above all safe. Remember to write it in the future tense - this is how you PLAN to carry out your investigation, you have not actually done it yet.

7. You must include SAFETY in your plan, if you miss this out you can often not get to the higher marks in this section, examiners will always look for this section first.

Obtaining evidence

This is the section where you actually DO your experiment.

1. Make sure you use appropriate equipment e.g. don't use a 500ml measuring cylinder if you only need 10ml of acid!

2. Make sure you repeat your test at least 4 times, this will ensure that you have plenty of data to draw reliable and accurate conclusions.

3. Make sure you carry out your investigation safely, and say how you did this.

Analysing Results and Drawing Conclusions

First draw a graph of your results. Make it clear, accurate and neat.

Remember to label your axis - don't forget units.
Also remember to write a clear title on your graph, and use a pencil, not pen.
The examiner will look that you have included the correct units on your graph - even if everything else is correct, no units = no marks.
Next... answer the following questions and this section will be a winner!!

Career Tests, General Personality Tests and Aptitude Tests

Personality tests are used to determine your type of personality, your values, interests and your skills. They can be used to simply assess what type of person you are or, more specifically, to determine your aptitude for a certain type of occupation or career.

Personality tests range from the five-minute Color Quiz which is supposed to determine your personality type by the colors you select, to the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator which is one of the top-rated personality tests that helps assess your personality type and helpsto explore career options.

There are a variety of tests that measure your intelligence or aptitude, inventory your skills and assess your ability to succeed in a career.

Aptitude Tests
Aptitude tests measure your ability to acquire a skill or do a particular type of work. These are the type of tests employers typically use to screen candidates for employment. The quotient is determined by dividing an individual's mental age by his chronological age and multiplying the result by 100.

Inventories
Inventories are checklists that you can use to identify factors which you relate to - and which you don't. They measure how your interests match those of other people employed in certain occupations. Career inventories, like the Strong Interest Inventory, provide a summary of your interest areas and the occupations that match your interests.

Personality Tests
Personality tests and other psychological tests measure your personal characteristics, your emotional makeup and your stability. They are often used by trained career counselors as a tool in the self-assessment part of the career planning process. Career Education: Does Not Mean the 6 Year College Plan

How Much More for the 6-Year Plan?

Depending upon the state and the type of post-secondary institution such as private or state, the 6 year plan can increase college costs anywhere from $5,000 to $70,000 using data from the U.S. Department of Education for the 2002-03 academic year. Avoiding the 6-year plan really makes sense, as these costs do not include books, additional fees, and any other supplemental expenses.

Why Has This Happened?

There are several key reasons for this national and state trend. First, many young people do not know what their desired major is. With a curriculum that is a mile wide and an inch deep, young people may not have the school time to adequately explore their interests.

Second, many young people do not plan for the challenges that they will be experiencing. In a survey revealed that both college freshman and sophomores did not realize that their coursework was remedial and did not count towards their degrees. Another recent survey from the National Governors Association (NGA) confirms that young people believe that they are unprepared for the demands of college and work in the 21st Century. Ignorance is very expensive.

Third, these same young people lack self-control, self-leadership, self-discipline, self-responsibility and time management. These young adults have been conditioned to have someone else assume all responsibilities. Unfortunately, another recent report revealed that high school counselors were not candid in their discussions with students about the students’ college preparation or lack thereof. An interesting side note is that these interpersonal skills or what some call job-readiness skills are the same desirable skills that employers are seeking and cannot find in college graduates.

What Can You Do as a Parent?

Recognize that the current solutions will not work as most of these are externally driven. Common sense tells us that we can’t change anyone. Seek an inside-out solution where your daughter or son internalizes the necessary positive attitudes and inter-personal skills through a proven goal achievement action plan. By working with the necessary positive attitudes, integrating new skills and knowledge such as goal achievement, time management and effective communication, your son or daughter will begin to plan their 4-year college future because you have set the expectations and provided the tool to turn their potential into performance.

If you choose not to take action, then consider these two questions:

Career Education: Options for Working Adults

Ask yourself this question: “Do I like what I do for a living?” If you answered “no”, what are you doing about it? Maybe you have a “good” job, but it’s not very rewarding to you personally. Maybe you have job with good pay, but bad hours or worse – a job with good hours, but bad pay. Perhaps you’ve just done your job for too many years, or are excited to work in some of the new careers that just weren’t available when you finished school.

Whatever the reason is for you wanting to switch careers, there are some practical considerations to take into account.

How long will it take?

How will I find the time to do it?

How much will it cost?

How long will it take to train for a new career?

The answer to this depends on what you want to train for. But, the majority of well paying careers that are currently seeking workers, take two years or less to train for. For example, becoming a machinist takes about 10 months. Training to become an X-ray technician can be done in a year. There are other training options that can get you a new job in only six months!

Your experience can also count. For example, if you work with computers on your job now, you won’t have to take word processing and spreadsheet classes if you want to be a medical coder. If you tinker with computers in your spare time while you’re working a retail management position, you’ll be ahead of the class when you train to become a help desk technician. Also, if you like working on projects around your house more than your job in an office, you’ll be more likely to obtain employment as an HVAC tech or electrician.

How will I find the time to go to school?

If you decide you want to train for a new career, there are many educational options. Traditional universities and colleges are one option, but tend not to offer a lot of flexibility in their class times. Community colleges are a better option since they have flexible classes, but due to limited resources, some of the most in demand training programs like nursing and dental hygiene have several year waiting lists in many markets across the U.S.

The educational option many working adults choose is a career college. Career colleges offer flexible scheduling and have the proper resources to greatly reduce waiting lists, if they have any at all. The biggest drawback is they cost more to attend. Consider a career college to be like a private community college. However, the flexible scheduling and the shorter time to graduation compensate for the higher initial cost of a career college.

How much will career training cost?

This is probably the most difficult question. If you’re like most working adults, you don’t have an eight month emergency reserve fund stashed away but, you do have credit card bills, a car payment, possibly children and that nagging monthly rent/mortgage payment. Chances are you’re not in a position to quit your existing job. Due to flexible class schedules you’ll still be able to work and keep that income. Student loans or grants are a possibility to pay for tuition. Also, check if your company has a tuition reimbursement plan. Even though you’re thinking about leaving your job, your company may have a need for the career you’re interested in training in.

The bottom line is if you don’t feel satisfied with your current job, you don’t have to stay with it for the rest of your working years. There are a number of great careers available that pay well and require less than two years of training time.

New standards will make sharing online education software easy and inexpensive.

Say "online education" and most people imagine taking an occasional professional development course via the Web or studying at a dedicated nonresidential school such as the University of Phoenix or the Open University in England. But on the campuses of traditional universities such as MIT, more and more educators and administrators are using the term to describe something more comprehensive: the advent of Web-based learning-management systems. These software-based systems, also known as course management or virtual-learning systems, debuted about five years ago and are designed to leverage the Internet to reinforce what happens in brick-and-mortar classrooms. Professors can post lecture notes and other course materials online, provide links to important resources, create class calendars, hold online discussions with students after class hours, and assign, distribute, collect, and grade homework, all on protected university sites. In the last two years, advances in computing technology have led to more user-friendly interfaces and higher-speed processing that have made the systems even more attractive. As a result, faculty are flocking to the systems in droves. At MIT, for example, the number of professors registered to use the Institute's learning-management system, Stellar, has skyrocketed from 50 in 2001 to 260 this year. Another jump is expected next year, here and at other universities not just around the country but around the world.

But while such systems may make life easier for faculty and students, they are causing major headaches for university information technology personnel and budget administrators. The problem is that, for the most part, each system was built around the unique information technology infrastructure of a single university. If a professor wants to update a particular function-say a tool for creating a course calendar-with software from another school, or that she wrote herself, it's not simply a matter of installing a new program on her office computer's hard drive. Theoretically, she or one of the university's information technology staffers would need to hand-code a patch to get the new software to work with the existing system. But in fact, it has become so costly to create these patches that administrators no longer consider it a reasonable option.
